  NO - the build from last year (3.5.13-sru) that I have running on one box has
the default channel set to 'Ubuntu IRC' #kubuntu

  That won't work.

  If you have konversation installed, just run it, the first screen pops up and
tells you which channel is the default. You can cancel then.
