seventh major difference: the 2nd system is looking for and finds a
/opt/trinity/share/config directory... the first does not have that
directory (line 5 of the above):

how were each of these systems created?  they're clearly not the same.
i'd strongly suggest doing a dpkg -L on each (or dpkg-get-selections),
a find / (with excluding of /dev, /proc etc - see updatedb's cron job
for an example) on each and then do a diff on those.
