I am probably as illiterate as you when it comes to translation. Anyhow here:

you can see an example of what a .pot file looks like (it is for kde4, but you can open it in Kbabel even if it complains about the header format). My guess is that it is a concatenation of the different po files available.
The attached screenshot shows an example, the red rectangle shows a translated string.

The main thing though is that .po files are not fully updated to the current sources, so we need one or more volunteers to do the update job :) This does not require programming skills, so even simple users can contribute to it.
