As I type this (web browser, mail client, IRC, and a PDF open) 300MB of 
RAM is used in total, and the system is snappy and responsive. Firing up 
an Akonadi-using application increases RAM usage to about 380MB. All the 
typical services/daemons (NetworkManager, HAL, udev, etc.) are running, 
just no Nepomuk/Strigi, and no KWin compositor.
