On my system, BACKGROUND is set neither in Konsole 3.5.13, nor in
xterm, nor in Terminal (the Xfce terminal emulator).
And vim (7.2.416) doesn't complain. My ~/.vimrc contains
set bg=dark
, perhaps you should add a similar line to your .vimrc ?
